1) To pull the slack out of a line or to apply tension to a line exiting a winch, to keep it from releasing until it can be cleated. 2) A line’s bitter end. 3) A line attached to the end of a wire to make it easier to handle. 4) To gather the unused end of a line neatly so that it does not become tangled.
